Those were the days, sheets of cardboard stuffed in between the radiator and front grille on just about every London bus and Black cab.

If it manages to reach overheat, the fan would help, but you'd have to be watchful. I'd do it with the IKP diagnostics trick so you can see exactly what's happening. The opposite side of the coin is you should improve the fuel consumption quite a bit.

What we need is a willing volunteer!

I'm dead serious!

I like the idea of fitting a higher rated thermostat that you mentioned in a previous post as it should take the guesswork out of it. Has anyone tried to source one ? My car is a CDTI and using the diagnostics only reaches the low 80's in use. The car has only done 22k miles so I assume the thermostat is ok.

I believe all the available thermostsats are in the 88-90C area, so it doesn't look hopeful. Assuming most thermostats in diesels are actually functional, the system loses heat almost as fast as it's generated (which isn't much). At this end of the year, it seems most diesels are running way below optimum.

Thanks for the reply. I have only recently learned the diagnostics method from the forum so will check the running temp in the better weather if we get any.

I intend to stick some sort of rad cover on my 75 if it still runs cool when I get it back.

At the moment it is in having the thermo and water pump replaced, as I want to be certain the cause is simply overcooling.

My ZX runs as warm as toast within 3-4 mins, as did its predesessor, so it is not a diesel thing, it's a Rover-BMW thing!! ...
