Default Pondering Auto Box Oil Change

Car has 68,000 miles on it. Is service time in a month or so and and am thinking about a G-box oil change. Is it worth doing out of routine? Or should I wait until it starts to take a while to change etc. I have noticed mind, that it sometimes takes a little longer to change from 2nd to 3rd during the inital few gear changes. Once it warms up its fine though.

Apart from getting the oil wrong, are there any real risks when it comes to changing the oil? Or can it only be a good thing?

Change it due at 60k and no point waiting for a fault to develop before changing it, nothing to be gained. The correct fluid is vital though, sorry forgoton the part number some one will be along in a second with it.

For an auto box the oil you require is TEXACO N402. Best get it form an xPart center if you can as it can be a littl ehard to get hold of. DO NOT USE A NON N402 OIL.

Instructions can be found here on how to do the change http://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/down...ile=tid011.pdf

I can do most jobs but I have to say that changing the fluid don't look easy unless you have access to a pit or a vehicle lift that will allow you to run the car through the gears whilst it is in the air. www.fedauto.co.uk lists auto box specialists throughout the country. I intend to leave this one job to the experts.

or am I being overcautious? I have read somewhere that you need to have a T4 to accurately measure the gearbox temp. BTW I realise the wheels don't need to turn, badly expressed that.

If in any doubt over whether they will use the correct fluid. Supply it yourself.

Available from all good Xpart centres

N 402, ATF 402, LNR 402, are no longer supplied by any dealers.

Part Number VYK 000040 is now (JF403E Auto Transmission Fluid) and is designated specifically for:-
JF403E 4 speed JATCO box and JF506E 5 speed JATCO box as fitted to all Rover 75 and MGZT Automatics.
Drain plug washer:- TEB 100040L

Yep, having done some online research, I think its best left to a transmission specialist, even if they might charge a little more. My usual diesel specialist mechanic didnt sound overly enthusiastic when I mentioned to him I was thinking about having a tranny oil change too!

I'll have a root around to see if there is anyone local who specialises in gear boxes. Out of interest anyone aware of a decent place in NW London or Middx?

you really need a dealer used to 75's.....it's a bit of a trip, but EXMS in Kent are very good.

Where in Kent are they? not managed to google them. But the more and more I look a bodge job stories on various message boards, the more I believe this routine but potentially future wallet busting job needs to be done by someone who knows the car....
