Default We Have To Trust Other Drivers

For years I have told everybody "think of every other driver as an idiot!"

This happened yesterday
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-englan...shire-51082515

Apparently, he was not British, was not insured nor held a licence for that vehicle - STAY SAFE!

My dad told me to do the same when I started driving at 17, very wise words.

I wonder if the firm that owns the lorry was aware he had no license.

Lucky no one else was involved

Default Astonishing

That level of punishment is utterly ridiculous. Showing such disregard for other people's safety is astonishing. He should be spending sometime behind bars. Driving anything when drunk deserves a stiff punishment but a Lorry?

Unbelievable.

When a penalty is imposed which seems stupidly inappropriate there is usually a story behind it.

The ban is for 22 months, that means he's lost his job and we will all applaud that. If he had been sent to prison it could possibly be the subject of appeal, citing unusual punishment/dependent family etc. and drag on for years with all the associated expense for the CPS and, unbelievably, a large dose of legal aid paid for by us.

As it is, he won't be back for a while and just might not be hired again in the same job. If he does get re-hired, and circumstances are as expected from 1/2/20, he will not have the same 'rights' as he does now. If he did come back and did it again he would go to prison. In the end, we win.

The OP said not British.--If he lives outside Britain the ban won't affect him.---

Possibly Jon, but his conviction will be on his licence and presumably known by his licensing authority?

It seems that he does not even work for the company who owned the lorry, therefore, the finance will be the only thing that affects him.
