What oil to use in an auto box?
It’s come time to service the auto box on my 2.0 v6 cowley…..
What oil is best for the auto box ? As I know there’s a few different types as my automatic metro is a cvt and that takes a special oil. Thank you. Josh

Carlube ATFu, a lot cheaper than the alternatives and just as good.

Maybe this one could be fine (Jatco - N402)
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/274074564...8AAOSwViNgleWy or this one rather similar https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/181669612...sAAOSwdilfZUGR

You're right, yours look directly fit for Jatco as ATF N402 @Arctic.
The difficulty is that the chap doesn't want to sell outside the mainland : that's why such an oil is absolutely NLA in France and we have to try some very close substitute (RAVENOL ATF JF506E, FUCHS TITAN ATF 4400 or FANFARO ATF 5 Universal Synthetic Dexron II III IV) mainly coming from Germany, such as the one I was giving in my previous post.

Hello Josh,
MG Rover says a fluid which meets N402 specification should be used. Here's my list which should be helpful. Simon

You're joking! No one of that kind miles around here in my South West of France area!
However brand dealers (Jaguar Land Rover or any other one) are repairing cars but I don't know any selling products like in a shop... I can go at general stores like Norauto or the like but there isn't any chance to find such special oil like ATF 402. BTW Rovers are now disappearing at high speed from our roads. You're going to laugh but the last one I've seen a few weeks ago 30km far from home was coming from... the Island of Man!

I'm using the Smith and Allan fluid and have had no problems at all. Definitely worth changing the fluid as the difference was that the box was much smoother after the change (probably never changed before for a long time). the fact that there is no dipstick means that you have to drop the fluid or undo a pipe to see what it looks like! It took me about an hour to drive up ramps, jack up the rear and put it on axle stands to level it, drain and refill (following the guide on the forum), then sit back on the ground. I also drained and refilled my engine with fresh oil (+ filter) at the same time.
Beinet's guide. Make sure that you read it all, to the end of the thread.
