Default oil leaks

I removed my under-tray this week to find a real mess. The original spongy sound deadening material was soaked in oil and the areas above the tray to the nearside were covered in a black oily mess. I suspect that some of this may have been old oil/ diesel spillages. I still believe I have a leak somewhere in this area, although it doesn't seem like brake fluid. What's the best way to clean this area, so that I can determine whether there are any new leaks and what are the main problem areas for leaks?
