Hi rovertone and Avulon,

You certainly can get paranoid reading some threads though, do think the UBP is good spare to have..there was no spare or jack etc in the car when I got it, have found a set and put it in now. Will look at water hose's and will take some tools.

Have done the trip a few times in various cars including a Merc 190 G reg never missed a beat only problem was the wiper fuse came lose just off the ferry coming back and it was peeing down..

Lucky with finding the rad Avulon, and thanks for the replies!

It might sound silly, but there is no point taking spares if you can't fit them, so make sure you take the appropriate tools (including torx bits etc.)

Personally, I have a spare under bonnet pump, spare tyre, spare bulbs and few other odds and ends.

It also depends what you have to hand - no point buying loads of spares to not need them. eg a spare camshaft sensor may be an idea, but at £75 from DMGRS that is a lot to have just sat in your boot...

Don't discount the obvious stuff too - A bunch of spare fuses is not a bad idea, along with a litre of coolant, and maybe even a gallon of fuel.

We broke down in the 75 on Easter Sunday in France. The RAC were brilliant and would have paid garage fees (upto £150), repatriated the car and sorted us a hire car... we didn't need any of that, just a jump start because some numpty had left the dash cam turned on for 3 days.

Most importantly you should get a quality breakdown service to cover you, also very importantly a full size spare wheel/tire.

Is your thermostat working as it should, and do you have AC, you will need it so there you have it. Enjoy Spain, and keep an eye on your car at all times, keep it locked.

No point in taking a socket for the crank pulley, they are uber-tight, you will not undo that with normal tools.

Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.

Apart from the standard legal requirements, all I would take would be:

Bottom pulley
Under bonnet pump
Belts

If you need anything else, they should be readily available being a BMW engine.
