Driving CDTI To Spain
Hi All,
Taking family to Spain in July in my 04 Tour and wonder what spare parts I should take with us? The car has done 155K and just had an alternator and new belts, oil and filter and brake pads. The bonnet catch caught me out at the weekend but now done. rustymotor. |

Maybe some water/antifreeze/ 1 ltr of oil in case your levels drop in the high temps? Usual warning triangle stuff but the M47 tends to be ultra reliable.

Hi, I took mine down to the Pyrenees last year, and a previous visit to France ended in a breakdown. You should consider those things that would stop your car dead. My auxiliary drive belt snapped near boulogne, they didn't want to know, said couldn't get the part. The fuel delivery system can cause problems, I would carry a spare top quality under bonnet pump. You should have a great time, these cars are at their best on the motorway.

Thanks mbev1,
I've done the belts and the old belt was not in bad shape so will take it along with a spanner for the belt tensioner and a socket for the crank pulley, only had the car a few weeks, the fuel pump is a concern after reading a few threads. Engine is running nice very quiet. |

I'm in the Algarve now and travel to and fro twice a year. I carry a spare UBP and have accumulated a set of water hoses which I cram into the spare wheel well. I carry bits and bobs of tools and gaffer/gorilla tape, bulbs etc.
Trouble is you can get paranoid about what to take as anything could go wrong, one of the downsides of a forum is that you hear about all things that can go wrong and start thinking 'will this happen to me'! The first time I did the trip with a caravan my radiator burst in Spain in the foothills of the Pyrennees, the local garage was ex Rover and they sourced a new radiator overnight! Make sure all routine service items are spot on, have breakdown cover in place and go and enjoy the 'open' roads. Good luck.

Good credit card, or euro-recovery - and it doesn't really matter how old or what make your car is once you get far enough from wherever home is - these are the only two guaranteed methods to get you back safely. It's nice to be able to fix minor faults and keep going though. Normally I'd carry socket set, spanners, general toolbox bulbs, belts and fuel pump. (oh and spare tyre/wheel - and jack).
