I have a feeling that we will end up with VED, fuel tax and a ROAD TOLLING SYSTEM in the not too distant future.

I think you have it the wrong way round Paul. I know a couple of chaps that have a few vintage cars one was bequeathed over a million pounds when his father died, he was self employed and is very generous and helpful, a real gent. The other chap has a bigger collection and has a couple of Ferraris too, he runs a local business but even his top engineer is paid well below the average for the job, in fact he goes through staff like water down the drain, he constantly moans that he isn't making money and the staff are useless, well he's lucky in his big house his vintage cars and both him and the wife have top model Mercedes.
Something gravely wrong in my mind..... greed comes to mind. No reflection on the OP though.
Jim if you can't afford the car I'd sell it or get rid of that Jag, it's,the money, pit!!!!

Yes I see your point but the 75 is not a vintage car, I purchased my 75 some 12yrs ago when I was working full time in a decently paid job. Due to bad heart attack I ended up having to taking early retirement. I live off my personal pention and savings and I take nothing off the state. The car lives in the garage and does less than 1500 miles a year and it gets right up my nose that I have to pay £300 plus just because I want to keep and use my car now and then. Its a NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD- ownership tax.

Well, last year or so, I have become somewhat financially unstable. Part of it was that I had to move house or set fire to my neighbours and kill them and go to prison for a long time, or to move, which I did. The house I moved to needed fixing. As in demolishing and rebuilding, which I did, mainly by myself. This ate pretty much all my savings and then last year, the wife went on long term sick, so was just getting SSP at the same time my job cut back on overtime. So I was somewhat strapped. And my Honda was a very nice car, that ran on lovely cheap LPG, but the tax was somewhat high, and I struggled to find the money to actually tax it to keep it on the road. It then decided to die. I need a car for what I do and to move things such as bags of plaster, cement mixers, paint and accoutrements, cupboards, and plants and pretty much anything else I have to move, which a bus wouldn't accommodate. Plus, around here, the bus service is pretty poo and doesn't go to where I need to get to most of the time.

Not that ANYONE cares or has any interest in any of that, it's just background to my point. Which I have now forgotten...

Ah yes! So, the Honda had engine issues which i couldn't afford to get fixed, so I needed a relatively big car cheap. The only car in the area that was cheap and big enough was the 75. And it just so happens I've always loved the 75 and the ZT. So it kind of worked out. I paid £900 for the 75, less than half of what the estimate to fix the Honda was. And then there was the tax which is cheaper than the other car, but not free. Now I am filling it up less often than the Honda, but on expensive dinosaur poo not cheap bum gas.
What gets me angry though is that I know people who have never worked, who have several children by several partners who own newer cars, pay less tax on them, never have issues finding the money to run them and just seem so much better off than me, working as much as I possibly can doing jobs that, frankly, I'd much rather not be doing.

I don't know where I'm going with this....

Something about tax. It'll never suit everybody however it's done. There. That'll do.

I've always just treated VED as 'one of those things' and paid up - on the Mazda I now have as a 2nd car, it's £546.00 per year.

I sold my Scimitar GTE last year and next year it will be tax free. It was costing me £230 per year to tax it and £100 to insure it. 3k miles per year.
When my MOT tester told me the emissions were cleaner than many 5 year old cars, no CAT, no ECU and just an old fashioned carburettor, it makes me grind my teeth with rage that every Government keeps telling me it should be scrapped as it's killing the planet. How is it doing that then?
Damn well said that man!!!

The OP should look on the bright side; no real depreciation, most spares still available and cheap compared to most German cars. Our cars have character and a great owners community.

I will tell you why. It's the pollution that spews out of the chimneys in China making the cheap tyres that people buy over here.

Well after much consideration I decided to go on for another year so forked out the extortionate road tax on 1st June.

A few days later the insurance renewal hit the deck at £212.22. Checking on the comparison websites turned out dearer. I am 66 years old, never had a fault claim in my life and have an advanced driving licence but it seems yet again I have to pay up to help pay for all the claims made for example whiplash.

Anyway I renewed it to stay legal but now the MOT is due and me being me I don't just simply put it in for test before checking the car thoroughly first.

With all the other "little" chores I'm finding it difficult to get this done so the car is sitting off the road. Maybe later this week with this better weather I will get back onto it.

One of the reasons for keeping the 75 on the road is the fact I will be using the XF soon and the missus needs something to fall back on as transport but I really think this year may be the last for running two cars.
