EDIT: Looking at the sensor system diagram in RAVE, it seems one lead gets the 5v reference voltage and the other is earth.
Generalising a bit but tempemperature sensors usually work on current 4 - 20mA.Its the cheapest and most reliable. You only need two wires.

Ok, I managed to find the Old Temp Sensor (BMW part photo above) and connector from my previous KV6 and have ordered a Sensor from Dmgr spares as a further precaution.

Just need know if I can swap out the sensor but accessing via side with throttle body off, rather than having to dismantle from over head via the manifold. Also will coolant go all over the V the moment the sensor is removed-I would presume so which is why am dreading attempting this street side in SW London.

Have also read within the Forum that dirt on the connector contacts from the Temp sensor can be a possible source of false readings, so will try and give them a wiggle and clean before removing or replacing Temp Sensor.

All tips welcome .

Give it a try Mike, if your hands are small enough.

Yes. To prevent this, drain some using the LH cylinder block drain plug (it's horizontally mounted near the exhaust manifold. Just needs the underbelly panel removing.).

I agree. Drive it home Mike and do the repair there.

yes you can do it this way .i changed mine after removal of the throttle body. coolant loss was barely a few drops. my engine however was cold. it tends to swell up coolant from the sensor hole once its removed but very slowly.no need to drain any as loss will be negligable. prepare by inserting the sensor into a 4 or 5 ins long rubber hose or similar flexi tube.(as you would do to start a spark plug thread off ) then have this ready at the side of the in situ sensor ready to fit the new one as you near the end of the unscrewing process. i used an o2 sensor removal socket to do the job and a flexible joint and extension so access was available from the side of the vee not from above. went well for me just needed to prepare a little beforehand. in my case i had forgotten to renew mine after a thermostat change with keyhole surgery !! good luck.

Default kaiser stat

oh and by the way mike i also did my kaiser stat with the keyhole method.its quite doable this way. never looked back since.its as solid as a rock movement wise. in my opinion this is a definitive answer to the problem if fitted correctly. there is no support for the plastic flexing in both planes. i once thought of using simons clips butted up method to secure the stat in one direction of movement and then to make a bracket to clamp the three hoses to the bell housing bolts to follow the engine movement as you rev up. this would take up movement in the other plane which i think is the critical one that does the damage to the o rings. the thing that people dont realise about kaisers stat is that the grooves in the stats base are much thinner ( in width not depth.) this gives a tighter fit to the rings especially as he uses wider o rings.also they have square edges (too sharp but thats remedied) this i believe gives 4 sealing faces.3 on the inner of the o ring and a very tight one outside. the rings flatten but this increases the sealing area on the outside. also the grooves on the original pastic stat are bevelled edges not square and allows the o rings to rise and deflate. just my observations and viewpoint. oh sorry for stealing the post a little but i thought simon may like to share my findings. thanks all.

I may go over there on sunday and try. When I started her up on 21st the engine sounded odd, so can only assume that was the engine management doing strange things. Wish me luck on Sunday if I collect her then!😬

Guys, Thanks for this and xsport your technique was the one that got it done. It took all of 2.75 hours from 9.30 to 11.45 last Friday to get it done with assistance too. Such a shame the new temp sensors have no magnetic parts to lower them down into position in the V from above.

No air locks after losing a cup full of coolant.
