Default DVLA Car Tax

Anyone know the latest on the government's car tax ripoff?

VOOT's tax disc runs out on 31st Jan and the DVLA renewal letter says £210 for 12 months, not the £455 announced in 2008 (KV6).

Have they abandoned the increase or does the £455 still apply from April 09?

My understanding is that the increases are merely postponed. You'll remember that when VAT was reduced by 2.5% from December, the Chancellor said that he would recover the lost income later. I believe the same will apply to VED so long as the politicians see carbon dioxide emissions as a useful revenue-raising tool.

Simon.

You just have to sign a committment to vote Labour at the next election when you retax the car (see Xmas is over then)

IIRC, there is a small increase in 2009 & 2010. Then, just before the election, the big increases kick in and we all get nailed.

Another stunning vote winner from Alistair "Spawn of Satan" Darling

no i dont think it is if you look at the dvla website the £455 is only for cars registered after 06

so it should only go up to £210 ish over the next couple of years...
