Yep out transport is great. Lots of buses and tubes and National Rail. But it is a very very big city so not all places get service. And we have to go outside sometimes you know. I am not saying the charge is wrong. Just that I don't know what to do as I love my 75. I will have to get rid of it in early '21.

Might be a bit of a problem to pay for that subsidy.

for some the time and distance required to get to to get to public transport added to the times public transport takes to arrive at the pick up point and then takes to get to the destination is too much. There is then the return journey, crowding and convenience.

Not used public transport in London for many many years but I recall it to be very time consuming.

Hitting diesels may help with pollution but will it deal with congestion? How much influence has the congestion charge had? I recall motor biking along the A40 filtering between lanes of stationary traffic on the way to Park Royal some 20 years ago, congestion was a nightmare then. wondered how people in cars could face it day after day

while some like the hustle and bustle of London, it is not for me. I prefer the green fields, forests and quiet of the country.

What has public transport been like this hot summer?

I think paying 12 quid a day to drive your beloved 75 into the zones is still cheaper than laying out 30k on an electric vehicle which will depreciate like hell & then the batteries wear out ??!!

  • Transporting more luggage than can be reasonably carried on public transport.
  • Transporting a group of people more economically.
  • Convenience, when the public transport routes are not.
  • For journeys outside the London area.
  • For long distances when food and drink is needed during the journey.
  • For use during the hours when public transport is sparse or non-existent.

Patrick, I am surprised that, having declared your profession as a “travel planner” and live in the suburbs, you should then make the statement above.

I used it early this summer, it was great very convenient and cheap with tubes every 2 minutes everywhere i went. Whether that's the case everywhere in London, i don't know but it was certainly the case where we used it.

I wouldn't image that is a common set of things to happen on a daily basis for the majority. Hire cars and taxis would cover off those sort of things and still be cheaper than running a car.
Whenever I've been in London having a car struck as me as a bit of a pain/luxury to own.

All valid and strong points Simon, thank you for making them.

Moving onto another change: the government wants to phase out diesel trains by 2040 https://www.ft.com/content/026e3bc6-...e-08320fc2a277

Thankfully Londoners don’t all think like you do about owning a car
