Looking for a Digital Camera
I know very little about photography, I am looking to buy (or PX parts ) a digital SLR camera that is capable of good quality continous shooting in poorly lit sports halls, all the cameras I have had to date take rubbish pictures in these conditions, either not enough zoom, blurry images and not quick enough to respond when needed.
If you have anything that fits the bill or can point me in the right direction please let me know |

Being a Nikon fan I would say take a look at the D40 or D60, both very capable low light shooters. What sort of pictures are you looking at taking? You mention sports hall, are you looking to shoot indoor sports?
But go and try some out in the shop, the ergonomics of the different makes are very different and can be a deal maker/breaker for a particular model. |

I would recommend a Canon Eos 350/400/450d a nice light SLR.

I'm a Canon man myself but whatever brand you choose the thing with an SLR is the interchangeable lenses - is this something you really need as it adds a HUGE variable into the equation.
Getting the right camera is one thing but then you have to make sure you have the right lens for the right situation. Sure there are many "all purpose" lenses for all makes of SLR camera but often some of the lenses packaged with cameras are the cheaper budget lenses and don't really do the camera justice. When considering a SLR camera you need to factor into it the cost of upgrading or buying a new lens for it - often these are as much as the camera itself and sometimes many many times more. For Canon cameras, have a look through this site www.thedigitalpicture.com As I say, it's for Canon cameras but even if you opt for another make you can get some good ideas - especially reading through the hints and tips sections. Hope that helps. |

Thanks all,
Simon, I am now even more confused, I thought I needed an SLR but now I don't know. What I mainly need it for is taking photos of indoor sports (Karate), so it needs to work well indoors in low light and have quite a good zoom as the subject can be 50m - 100m away and have fast continuous shooting Any ideas folks |

Yeah an SLR would be ideal for indoor because of the adjustments that can be made, for adjusting to the light conditions, plus having a zoom or telezoom lense for the distance

I still use 35mm Film for these sorts of Situations with a Nikon and Minolta SLR, Motor-drive at up to 10 Frames per second.
I am sure there will be Digital out there but not at a Similar cost and Performance ratio. |

If you wanted digital and not a interchangable len SLR, I would look at the panasonic lumix series. I was impressed with even the compact versions. Not sure on the specs or how well they work in dim light though.

I think its the Multi Exposures (Motor Drive) that will be the Problem for Les on most of cheaper and all in one Digital Cameras.
