am i ********?
got new car mg zt 1.8t today and everything is great, until, i went to car wash, im sat of the forecourt for about 10 mins with engine in idle then they all come round and spray the hell outta my car with water for ages, then they leave me alone for a bit while they clean another car, during this time my engine temp goes right to the top and my engine starts steaming like crazy! i turned off engine, opened bonnet and there was obviously a lot of water in engine from the wash. i waited till they finished, started engine again and temp was normal in middle and now more steam. was this just a case of water got in, or have i brought a nail!

Hopefully it's was just the wash that caused the problem.
Let it dry out and see how it is then. |

I would say either stuck Thermostat or in-operational Fan. I would lean towards the fan....
But whatever it is I would get it sorted quick-style as the 1.8 doesn't like overheating at all. I know most cars don't, but the 1.8 is notorious I'm afraid.

What year and what mileage?

if they closed the bonnet after they soaked it .. the steam trapped in there would make it very hot under there untill it dispersed
so i reckon with a brief blast of steam under the bonnet could have raised temps alot

Just had a similar power spray clean with engine idling. No trouble at all. I agree that the powerwash should not affect the engine if bonnet was closed throughout the process. Are you losing coolant anywhere? If not, then I too would be looking at stat and/or fan.

I never use "industrial"power washers after a problem with a Volvo I had. Water found it's way into somewhere it wasn't meant to be and I lost the electrics (lights etc) at the rear for a couple of days.

I would check the fan operation as my MGF after being driven then sitting about idling waiting for the car washers for 10-15 minutes my fan cuts in runs for a minute then stops with no visible movement of the gauge. So it may just be the fan ain't cutting in. Once you are driving then the air flow helps keep the temperature down and a faulty fan is less noticeable.

When stationary the car relies on it's fan to stay cool.. Check the fan!!
