Hi,while deciding what to do with my seized a/c compressor, I've had my three speed cooling fan apart and one of the four brushes has disappeared leaving the wire and spring to gouge a groove in the armature.Im hoping among my spares in the attic I may have another 3 speed fan,if not can the same commutator/armature off a V6 fan be used to replace the damaged one,so I can replace the brushes on the original housing and marry the two up.My car is a diesel.Regards Ryszard...

If you're thinking of removing the armature from the housing I'd say it can't be done - and I've tried. The armature and housing into another unit, don't see why not (?). But I have managed to recover several motors which looked horrible including deep gouges like perhaps yours by skimming the commutator and finally cleaning up by using a Stanley type knife to score the segments.

Answer is yes you can use any fan motor but you must retain the original board & wiring to the car along with its loom.

Hi,thanks,mine is actually worse than the one in your first photo so beyond rescue I should think.Luckily amidst my 'look in here if all else fails' attic I came across a three speed set up,just require to change one of the brushes which is half worn.Regards Ry.....

Just a reminder to buy them directly from Engineering Carbon Products Ltd. in Croydon and nowhere else!

Hi,yes got a set from them.Quandry is on my replacement sett up 3 of the brushes are almost whole,the fourth brush is approx 2/3 in length so I am tempted to leave alone in case my soldering is not up to the job.Suppose it depends how much the fan is used but am I correct in leaving that brush alone.My theory is they last a long time and I do not use my car a lot.Regards Ry.....

Hi Ry,

If that brush is connected to the purple wire then you can leave it alone. If it's connected to red or black, renew it.
