122,000 miles of cylinder wear.
As the title says, I was wondering what the difference between the old cylinders and rings are compared to the new, there is slight scuffing on the piston skirts, and it would seem that it's about the right mileage to change cylinders and rings.
The differences in both pictures are a lot in engineering terms and I'm now glad it threw a wobbly. If mine is worn like this then so are many others. Even though my engine was sound, it had started to give a little puff of light smoke when it was booted hard. I hope this little thread gives food for thought....but not soup! It's a 1.8 petrol. That looks about right for that amount of mileage
By the time most modern petrol engines have got to 150 - 170 thousand miles in general use they're getting pretty worn out. I suppose we should be grateful, the cars of the 60's and seventies you could easily reduce that by half There's always exceptions though those that have been meticulously maintained and looked after have over doubled that, Brian's R8 has an awful lot more than that, 3 times more IIRC Russ

Regular oil changes kept my old HGV's running for moon mileages. A good diesel or petrol additive was also proved to help in my past experience. Many will argue (snake oil etc.,) but I stick by what I saw with my own eyes on identical vehicles on identical runs, with and without the additives.

that's in a lot better condition than my 1.8t, after 55k the liners were shot. although it ran well, there was severe water damage to each liner (one was particularly bad). it had been badly treated though, I haven't seen a turbo in as bad condition before. so much so there was more oil in the intercooler than the sump...
