I've never driven an Auto before. What are they like?
Simple question folks
With so many people believing that an Auto is best suited to the character of the Mk1 75, I'm curious to know what they are like to drive. I have never driven an automatic car before - not one, not ever. So what are Autos like compared to manuals? I gather they they are a bit slower, and drink a bit more, but are more relaxing? But how exactly - there are still positions to move the lever to Yes, I don't know how you operate an Automatic gear selector So can anybody tell me what they are like to drive please? : Thanks, Bolin.

I had stayed away from them for ages until i bought mine 2 months ago and i love it,no wonder they call it the lazy mans car I have also had her re mapped and she goes like the proverbial. as for fuel i am gettign about 37 to the gallon. as for the gear lever i just put mine into drive and press the accelaraotr pedal and obvioulsly reverse when i need to. i have 2,3 and 4 but never use them, hope this helps

Weeeellll...
Just put the selector into "D", release the brakes and press the gas peddle. Gear changes will take place...er...automatically. They are much more relaxing to drive drive, especially round town, where the "creep" in drive with the engine idling is very useful in heavy traffic. Positions 3-2-1 are really not needed for most driving. For a comfortable car like the 75 an autobox suits the refined nature of the car to a tee. I had always stayed away from auto's as i always thought they would have sloppy, slow gear changed.
then i saw my ZT180 up for sale and bought it (admittedly a little dis heartened by the auto) purely for the immaculate condition it was in, with the intention of eventually converting it to manual. But the gear changes are instant and smooth. It changes exactly where you want it to, whatever your driving style. Makes full use of the rev range and power when kicked down into Lairy mode, and is refined and comfortable when your driving through town in lethargic mode. I wouldn't go back to manual I Cant fault the Jatco box in any way

Hard to go back to a manual after an auto - they are so good in the rover 75.
I have a V6 2.5 and a Diesel - actually think the diesel is a better match although the V6 is good too In the diesel, the gear changes are instant and almost imperceptable |

My missus only has an auto license, so I only get auto cars (that way she can pick me up in my motor after I've had a night out....). I see no reason, other than a few MPG, to ever return to a manual. Stick it in Drive and forget about it. Plus no clutch to replace every few years.
I've had a 4X4, a sports car and now the 75, each were faultless. |

p.s. just had a flashback - I nearly pranged a Jag XF hire car a few months ago when I got out to release a security gate and left it in Drive. A manual would have, of course, stalled.
(Phew!) |
