Well I tried this method and I cannot for the life of me remove either the thermostat or the elbow pipe. They are stuck in there. I do not want to break them as I am too scared to have plastic pieces fall in the engine.
Removing the 10mm elbow and thermostat retaining bolt went fine with 1/4" wobbly extensions, but nothing else. Maybe its because I have a Freelander, but that elbow pipe is not coming out whatsoever. Time to remove the front inlet manifold.. |

The elbow pipe rarely comes out in one. Time to break it out carefully

frustration
I have followed the keyhole method and done well, until time to fit the new one... seated the straight pipe and stat, but the elbow pipe is being a pain in the ass and moving every time I squeeze my hand in to do the bolt up... given up for the day

To aid fitting, it's worth putting a little silicone lubricant on the O Rings while fitting - while they may move about a bit, with lubrication they should be easy enough to keep seated.
I'd recommend using this method to anyone fitting a new thermostat - makes it a lot easier!

I did lube it the seals a bit but i'll try again tomorrow, once I start getting annoyed it's best to leave it and try again later.. it didn't help the torch broke
Thanks for getting them to me so I could start it today, If I had one regret its not buying the clips, I reused the ones of the old pipe but Jesus they were hard to get off the old pipe! lol |

The keyhole method didn't work well for me at all. I got the old stat out but couldn't make a good seal on the new one. In the end, armed with my torch, cable tied to the bonnet, I worked on in to the night removing the fuel rails and inlet manifolds. For those who don't have LPG, removal of the inlet manifolds isn't too bad. For those who do have LPG, you have my deepest sympathies as the LPG kit is just another thing in the way to remove.
Good luck. Rik.

success...(hopefully)
Well I cracked on with it this morning and with this forum and a couple of 'how-to' guides I have the car back together...
Jesus it weren't easy, but using a reply on this thread I moved the breather and metal plate on the left of the opening... that made access a little easier. More lube got the elbow seated nicely and another tip of using a piece of broom handle going into the elbow pipe gave me some leverage to get it sealed sweet was a godsend! I would post pics but I ain't took any that ain't already been posted here.. But I got t say a MASSIVE thanks to the writer of the original guide and the people that replied to his post giving their little tips! Without you lot I wouldn't have even attempted it this way |

Looks like mine might need doing how do you disconnect the rear pipe ie the straight coolant pipe, i believe left hand side of thermo looking at engine from front?

I didn't do the keyhole method, but on mine, the straight pipe just came away when I pulled the 'stat housing out. The straight pipe isn't fastened massively strongly from memory.
