Default ZT 2.5 V6 - Gear level lateral play

As the title suggests, the gear lever in my 2001 ZT 2.5 V6 has some lateral play in it. This play is there in any gear and neutral. I would describe it as "a loose fixing" feeling. It's had this play from when I bought it a couple of months back, the garage said it was normal but I'm not so sure and would like some feedback on this.

The gear lever moves approx half an inch in total, mostly left and right but there is also forward/back movement although not as pronounced.

Thanks in advance!
Simon

Come on, surely someone can comment if this is normal or not?

Simon,

Checked my gear stick today. It has around a total of half inch movement from l to r when in gear, and tons more when in neutral (as expected).

No significant movement fore and aft.
