Default Alternator woes, maybe...

On the way home from work this evening, the charging light started flickering on and off, eventually staying on after about 2 miles. Got home without any drama, and parked it up. Anyone fancy changing an alternator for me?

Anyone have an opinion on this? Ie; How do I ascertain if the alternator is indeed kaput? Cheers, Phil.

Put a volt meter on alternator with engine running see what the output is also check terminals on battery are clean and battery clamps tight. I would also get battery checked as well.

Cheers Jim. The battery is still charged, but I haven't tried starting it since last night. I'll see if I can borrow a meter this evening.

Good chance it just needs new brushes which can be sourced for about £6

I would say equal chance its the Alternator ... brushes with regulator cost me almost £40 and then it didn't fix it so I had to lay out for an alternator (Valeo £135).
Given that the brushes may have gone if this is still the original alternator it stands a chance that the bearings are not too good now either.

There's 135k on the car, FSH with no mention of alternator work done, so I assume it's the original one. Only had the car 3 weeks...

Thankfully you don't always need to swap the alternator - 9 times out of 10 the fault is with the regulator pack or brushes.
I sell the complete regulator and brush pack - simply remove yours and bolt this on in situ. It takes well under an hour to fit.

Regulator Pack - CDTi
