It is odd what we do, but only when "we know better", for at the time, it seemed the logical thing to do.
We used to have an open coal fire when we grew up. Mum would have her comments to us about the fairies dancing on the rear of the fire, i.e. the sparks creeping up the soot, magical.
Magic too was the draw when I was about six or seven, and I could put the poker into the fire and pull it out, glowing red and almost too hot to hold the handle end of it. How hot? come on boy, how hot is red hot? So, mum's safely lounging in the bath, and me with the fire, my fire. I pulled that poker out of the fire, it was nearly white hot and that is hot, so hot it burnt through all the flesh with a strange sickly smell, and stuck, so I had difficulty letting it go. I haven't done it since because, I know!

My recent daft idea, was tamping gravel down in between the slabs at the back of my drive, where I park the caravan. I decided the easy way was to use my SDS chisel, in my SDS drill, but with a bit of bar welded on the end like a T. Drill set on roto-stop, so it just hammered and compacted.

All went well, it worked absolutely great, except I became careless and accidentely flipped the roto-stop to rotation and - by do those SDS have some torque. The T flipped out of the gap and gave my ankle a really good crack as it span. Plenty of blood and an indescribable amount of pain.

Several years before, using an electric saw to trim the side of a door, the door wasn't well enough held, moved and I ran the saw into the end of my right index finger. It chipped the end of the bone, cut through the nail which I later lost, lots of blood, but surprisingly no pain at all. I rinsed it, wrapped and drove myself to A&E. To my surprise it healed up absolutely fine, despite the damage, but the tip had no feeling at all, even that seems to have come back now.

At work, dealing with a flooded bank and banking hall. For safety I had isolated all supplies and installed some temporary sockets for dehumidifiers, pumps, temporary lights and aquavacs, for the guys called in to dry the place out. I had fitted RCD's to every socket for safety made it clear to everyone that no equipment was to be run without the RCD protection and written large warning notices to that effect. In my absence, another fool of an engineer had visited site, found that one of the dehumidifiers was tripping its RCD, but worked fine if plugged directly into a socket, so had made an assumption that the RCD was faulty and despite instructions and notices, had left it without an RCD.

Harry arrived early next morning, in the dark, opened up, walking into the still dripping banking hall, feeling his way around, across a soaking wet carpet and happened to touch the live metal case of one of the dehumidifiers, the one which had its RCD protection removed. Harry was thrown across the banking hall and was unconscious for several seconds. The stupidity of some people, just defies belief.

Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.

Default Ehem......

Well, I can only remember getting a clobber from my old man twice. On this occasion....was it justified....? You can make your own mind up....

Now , to set the scene the previous weekend we had been abseiling with our scout group. Full safety gear, hard hats, safety lines....

The following Saturday with nothing much on. (We were 13 I think) Stephen , Ronnie and I decided to err....have a go ourselves. First issue was the rope.
Now Stephen was blessed with an old fashioned greenie pole type washing line in his back garden. So his mum's rope was swiftly acquired. ( funnily enough she was the wife of our scout leader).

So, rope sorted we need a nice bit of rock face. Well not much in Monifieth....except.....the good old Seven Arches disused railway viaduct. A well known smokers haunt at the back of Monifieth High School.

So down to the river and off the bold three lads set toward the viaduct. . Rope attached to the remains of a signal . Now we were not daft enough to go down the middle as the rope wasn't long enough but Insuppose our spot was 25 feet!

So a nice little session was had ......

Now noticing we were now overdue for tea we set off for home. To be met by my Dad who was now out looking for the bold lads.

Not being the brightest at hiding my activities. ( the coiled rope round my arm being a give away) I owned up when asked what we were doing. 'Ah well Dad ,' says I ' We were abseiling off the viaduct.'
Now he was none to pleased but maintained a dignified silence to ask .

'What was that you were using for a rope?' This time, after being informed where the rope had been obtained from, he pointed out that this was not very sensible. It was not designed for abseiling. It might have broken under your weight. ...

Now my answer...down in family folklore....was...

Ah...well no dad! I sent Ronnie down first as he is heavier than me......

The resultant clout was somewhat swift.....

Well, it seemed sensible at the time!

strange how the body does not send pain signals for some incidents. When I chopped the top off of one of my fingers, there was no pain

I think the ankle bone sensitivity to pain is quite similar to the 'funny bone' of the elbow.

I also seem not to be susceptible to pain from fractures. I tall pair of steps collapsed under me at work, which resulted in a lower arm fracture - thing was I didn't know I just carried on working for a couple of hours, as it gradually swelled up. I slipped in the bath and fractured the index finger of my right hand, no pain - I just splinted it myself.

I “repaired” the flymo lead. I used an inline connector the wrong way round. The male part of the inline plug was connected to the mains. Thus I managed to put my thumb across the phase to neutral pins. Fortunately the resistance was less across my thumb than through my body to ground. I just felt a buzzing and avoided any burn or injury. Not sure how but there you go.
