75 Connie SE Tourer - Help Emptying Petrol Tank
Sad news this morning is that my Connie SE Tourer is beyond economic repair. Something at the back end broke on Monday and the offside rear wheel is now tipped in at the top and I'm told that fixing it includes frames and subframes, etc, etc. So after 7 and 1/2 years and 80k+ it's destined for the crusher. Bye bye Connie
Going to scavenge some parts for my remaining Rover 25 so that old beast will continue on. Typically filled up on with petrol on sunday night so I'm pondering how to get the tank emptied into my jerry cans. Can anyone offer any advice? Last edited by Chop; 12th September 2018 at 08:56.. I don't know for sure but remove the filler neck and syphon it out would be the traditional way.

Sounds like it is one of the rear upper arms - maybe rusted through. Hardly a reason to crush a Connie with only 80k on the clock.
Subframe only needs dropping if you can't get the bolts out in situ. Get someone who knows what they are doing and it shouldn't be that expensive. There are only 4 bolts holding the subframe in place anyway. Just done both rear arms on mine - 18 year old car with original arms and didn't have to touch the subframe. With 397k on the clock I know I should have scrapped it, but this one is special. |

I'd ask you not to scrap it if you are going to get rid of it, offer it to members on this forum.
even if you only get scrap value a member may be able to put it back on the road. if sub frame and lower arms needed it is more fiddly then expensive if you can do it yourself. what are the list of items it failed on? macafee2 |

Reading the post there's no mention of a MOT more that something let go at the back end and the wheel is sitting at an "interesting" angle.

My Tourer has gone exactly the same way this last week with a likely upper arm failure after rotting away scarily since the MOT in April and a pot-hole the likely culprit, rear near-side wheel now leaning in at top.
Wouldnt dream of scrapping without at least trying to replace the arm, 'only' 3 bolts to get undone......!!! good luck.

Garage is talking rubbish, the part you require can be found HERE and I replaced two of these on Saturday gone.
Total time taken 1 1/2 hours Piece of cake to do on a two post ramp, a bit more awkward to do on axle stands Brian |

The Connie actually made 163k miles on the clock and had an engine replacement not long after I purchased it and 'blew up' the original...
I don't work on the cars anymore. No facilities, knackered up knees and fingers and hands that don't do well anymore. Can manage some stuff on but leave most to a friend with his own garage business. He's kept the 75 and 25 on the road for the last few years. Apparently the offside rear upper arm had rotted away. The bolts on the subframe are so badly corroded that he thinks it will be very difficult to get them out and the nearside is going to go the same way. He's worried that it could spiral into a time and cost consuming exercise hence the decision to scrap. I limped it the 2 miles home (avoiding the potholes) and parked it up on the drive ready to get the fuel out. Except for enjoying reading the tech stuff and a few other bits I haven't spent a lot of time posting on forums so am having some problems finding my way around yet. Thanks for the help and advice, it is certainly appreciated. |
