Default Help with Tourer rear suspension woes!!

Evening all, I have noticed that a thumping noise has developed this week on my nearside rear suspension together with a definite inward lean on the wheel at the top. I am in the process of replacing the shock (not convinced this will cure problem as its not snapped as originally thought) but wondered if any thing else could break to cause these symptoms? Wife is already talking of replacing the car due to occasional issues (my ar$e!!) but I would hope it was a easy/cheap fix but underneath is very rusty due to very salty roads here in winter in the far NE of Scotland and am anticipating possible ongoing problems underneath!

Hi Smudge,
It may just be the upper damper mount having given up the ghost. At least that's what happened to me last year. Its quite an easy job, the hardest part is removing the interior trim!
I ended up replacing both upper mounts to be on the safe side plus both dampers - one was much easier to compress than the other.

Good luck,

Rob

Hi Gary, I very much doubt it’ll be the shock absorber as it doesn’t do anything to align the wheel. It’s more likely to be the arms have rotted and allowing the wheel to lean in so worth a check

I agree with Les I am afraid. More likely to be the arm has collapsed. This leads to the wheel leaning in a shock or Spring does not.

Tyre rubbing against the inner wheel arch is a typical symptom of the rear upper arm corrosion monster.

Here’s my experience from some years ago when it was unheard of.

You better order the other side too, as the offside arm is often worse than the nearside

Plenty of plusgas on the inboard pivot bolts, break the rust bond by tightening first, then slackening.....and if it starts to get a bit tight when undoing the bolt, wind it back in and more plusgas

Patience is the key to not having to drop the subframe
