I don't think the estimate by the owner of the car to repair of £11000 is particularly realistic, even if it is painted in Typhoon, and the insurers were more than fair in their settlement offer, especially as the car had been subject to a total loss previously.

Craziness really

No, but it'd more than cover the cost of a replacement rear bumper and a boot lid!

A bootlid and rear bumper could be comfortably painted using 1/2 litre of original PPG Typhoon, so £500 maximum for paint cost, and let's say £150 being generous for a boot lid and bumper, so £650 in materials.

I'll take on that job if he's worried the costs wouldn't be covered by the settlement

Typhoon is now really difficult to get hold of, something to do with one of the tinters that make up the majority of the mix not being that available anymore is what i kept being told. I kept hitting the same wall no matter what paint supplier i tried. One quoted me £1k + vat for a half litre. Dave contacted PPG and even they said the same thing. Said they had enough to produce half litre , cant remember the price quoted but think it was closer to £750 for that half litre. Caused me a lot of stress over the last 2 months trying to source the paint.

That being said, typhoon is still available from specialist paints for £360 a litre. Now he may be unlucky and finds the two shades they offer dont match like i did, bit even in that case 2 litres should do the whole car so that + labour etc would still be nowhere near that quote.

Dont know where he went to get that quote, i know the owner on the facebook groups. Tbe insurance company requested he get a quote from a "specialist" they use, probably some approved paint shop and they submitted the £11k quote. I mean did they send him to rolls royce?

As above, his estimate of repairs seems £10k too high.

The insurer's offer doesn't seem unreasonable for a car that is insured for the "market value" and not an agreed value.

It seems to me to be a case of someone trying to use the media to get his way.
