I replaced my emergency wheel with a standard alloy about 3 years ago because of concerns about the age of the tyre.

That reminds me, I too bought a full size spare about 12 years ago and it has never been fitted to the car. Must get the garage to report on its condition next MOT.

If you put a full size spare in the boot then swap it along with the other wheels - that way the same wheel won't sit for years doing nothing.

Also used to drill out good wheels to make them fit cars to race.

And sometimes had to fit them the wrong way round - needs must.

Do you still race ? That second photo looked as though it hurt .

Sadly not - I stopped when they closed our local track. The two cars in the photos wouldn't be classed as bangers these days mind - I only paid 50 quid for the Grannie and 30 for the Capri.

Rolling didn't hurt - just had to be careful when getting out as they didn't used to stop the race unless there was an injury. More often than not it was safer to stay put and strapped in until cars spaced out or the race ended. There was an Acrow behind the driver's seat to hold the roof up if the car did tip over.

Once we got the Capri back on its wheels it did another two heats and then won the final and a Trophy - it was surprisingly fast for a 1600cc engine.

I've often thought their only other useful role might be to fit 4 for heavy snow weather as they could cut through the snow with the car's weight....on the basis that you wouldn't want to travel fast. Might be useful to test on a private track!

In real life I agree with Trikey-really only any good to weigh cars in, or as slave wheels tostand car on if you send yours for a refurb!

I use the spare when undoing hub nuts.

With the wheel fitted and car on the floor I have never failed to undo the hub nuts with my breaker bar. Best too, for the job.

Would always keep a spare for that job
