Bought a dud
Well for the first time ever I regret buying a car, we bought a Renault Espace Mk4 1.9 Dci it has an intermittent power fault that is proving to be difficult to sort out. I have had it diagnosed by two different people, both came up with the same fault codes but finding the root cause is not easy. When it is running well it is a nice drive but 60% of the time it runs rough. It misses as though it is starved of fuel, a new fuel regulator and rail pressure sensor have been fitted but made very little difference I have checked and cleaned all wiring connections even checked the ECU plugs and wiring. I don't know what to look at next it has had a new fuel filter the air filter is clean. I have cleaned the EGR valve and inlet manifold.

Back to basics is as good a place to start as any; look in the fuel tank for any signs of contamination and unplug and check all low pressure fuel pipes are clear.
What were the fault codes? |

My experience of Renault dealers is not great, and would suggest looking for a specialist. The renault forums used to be actually quite good for info. I use it when I have an issue with my mother's clio. A search is all it takes normally. EXAMPLE

A friend had a Laguna with the same problem, luckily for him it was a company car but even the dealer could never fix it completely. In the end it was put in the car pool and he was given another.
He lost all power one night in contraflow, he free wheeled into the coned area and it refused to start. The RAC turned up and hour later and of course it started up and he drove home with no further incident. |

Well it's the end of the road for the Espace the wife took it to Oxford to visit her mother, the engine has started knocking so I have taken one of the rover 75,s
over to rescue her and some of the grandchildren. I am awaiting the arrival of the RAC ro recover it back to home. |

On the bright side, if it's turned into a permanent problem you should be able to diagnose the fault.

On a more serious note, could the MAF sensor be toast?

+1 on the MAF sensor.
Might also be worth checking the condition of the fuel filter. Metal swarf in the fuel filter return would indicate a worn high pressure fuel pump. I had a Renault 1.9dci that gave me some issues a few months back. Does the car rev freely in neutral? It should be hit the rev limiter around 4.5k rpm?
