Default Alternator HELP !

My alternator has died - I think !

Last week the message center displayed the message CHARGE FAIL, and the battery warning light came on. I was about 2 miles from home so drove straight back and parked up on driveway. The car is a 2004 facelift conni SE diesel saloon.

Yesterday I thought I would try it again to see if the fault had gone away - well you can be optomistically hopeful - but the battery was now flat! I assume that the alternator fault has drained the battery?

I have someone coming on Saturday to fit a replacement unit, and I will be supplying the new parts.

My questions are as follows :-

Looking on the EuroCar Parts site they offer 2 alternative fitments, how do I know which one to order as I cannot see any referances or part numbers on the alternator when fitted to the engine? and these appear to be a "to order" part only.

Are DAYCO belts OK ?

Thanks for any possible help.

I have just had the same problem. The difference between the 2 alternator options is the Amps they give out, I believe the 2 pin version provides a higher output but they both fit our diesels. Just in case yourself or your mechanic are unaware the alternator can be changed from below without removing the front end of car. There is a how to on here by Arctic.

HI Steve.
Your alternator will either have a two pin plug or a three pin plug, remove it and check, also ask the sellers to make sure.

Three pin plug

Two pin plug.

Hi Steve,

not a good day, pulled out the locking clip and dropped it !!! grrrrrr

Playing with my new toy, an endoscope which I bought to look for an under floor board water leak, I can see only 2 pins coming out of the alternator, but I did manage to read the following from a plate on the alternator.

YLE000260

2542797A

14V 70 / 120A

so from this I assume its the 2 pin version that i need ......

That reference is for the Valeo 2-pin OEM alternator with 120A output.

I can’t help with the alternator stuff, but I will chime in by saying that Dayco belts generally seem to be well regarded around here.

A garage I wholly trust fitted a Dayco timing belt kit to my 1.8 and they never use carp parts.

The alternator belt on a diesel is a 5PK2030, and I would always use Gates belts over Dayco, they are much better quality

Gates were the OE supplier to Rover too
