So road tax, here we go.

214 SEi £145 PA
45 diesel £145 PA
ZT 135 £180 PA x 2
75 diesel £180 PA x 2
75 1800 £225 PA
Freelander £225 PA

So that's £1460 just to have them standing at the door, without any other running costs.

So a V8 for me at least would need to be in the lower tax bracket, not because I cannot afford it, but because I begrudge paying this money to the state

And now you don't even get a piece of paper for your money

Brian
I am so glad you have posted this... I can now show her indoors...that I do not spend a lot on my cars compared to my namesake from up North that car tax bill is eyewateringly painful BUT what a nice choice of cars to choose from to take out 214sei being my favourite.

Well said Brian.

The Government wants you to buy a new car regularly so that they can get the benefit of new car tax, VAT etc. and offer the carrot of cheap or free VED to you while you save the planet with tiny emissions from the new car, even though at least 75% of the environmental cost of the new car is making it in the first place!

No credit for keeping an older car on the road to a logical end by having a sensible VED policy and allowing enthusiasts to do their bit by using the money to maintain them properly, until the Government then decides they become a "classic" at 25 years old, when it's free!

Seems bonkers to me: thank goodness Brian and others use a different logic. It's always useful to have another vehicle available if one does let you down unexpectedly

I'm afraid the days of the 25year old "classic" have long gone. It's now a rolling 40 years.
I think Brian just proved that logic has nothing to do with owning a car.😀

Have to agree. Brian has a luxury problem.

All he needs to do is sell the Freelander and the 75 1800 and there can be a V8 on the drive

I have a feeling a V8 doesn't figure on Brian's shopping list! Every time I wind him up about T4'ing my 260 I am told to go forth and multiply
