Had a Triumph Stag back in the day and struggled to get to the bottom of a miss-fire. Reset the points God knows how many times and then realised there was a second set beneath the top ones as they had one set for each bank. |

Lol, I bet that was a eureka moment when you discovered the second set?

Think about the mileages you got out of old, carburettor engines. 100,000 miles was a rarity without re-shelling, reboring etc. And how often did you have to check, clean or adjust plugs, points, tappets and carb? But they were easy enough jobs, which you got good at with regular practice, and you largely relied on your own sensors, - eyes, ears and nose - to get the settings right. Now, most parts aren't fixable, or adjustable, you just replace them (if you can work out what isn't working without a diagnostic computer). Designers certainly don't consider the DIY mechanic these days, and service/repair costs, although they come at much higher intervals, also act as a cynical incentive for you to ditch your old car for a fully warrantied new one. Designers also make some huge design errors (or are they?) - critical and complex electronics put in vulnerable places (plenum drain, anyone?) But if everything is well designed and well engineered, you can get a very reliable and very economical car. Doesn't mean you're going to love it, though!
