Front and rear back plates
Are the front and rear back plates for the brakes held on by Allen bolts that require a 7mm Allen key to undo them?
I think it's 7mm cant see it in Haynes or rave but I think it's 7mm thanks macafee2 |

You think correctly, it is a 7mm Allen key.

To replace the front backplates, which are secure with standard M6 bolts, the drive flange must be pressed out of the wheel bearing
Not as easy as it sounds either Brian |

Ahh, backplates! I thought it was the caliper carriers (This is wht you get when reading posts after a few Guinness!!)
The rears are held on with four 6mm headed cap screws. Cant remember the size of the fronts for sure, im thinking 8mm Hex???

Front ones need a 7mm spanner but you can remove them as I have done by clipping a small position away from the front edge which allows removal.
When I fitted my new plates to both my 75’s a few years back I cut away that same section and machined the cut edges before painting them. On my current project 75 I’ve just removed them and cleaned them up as at almost 16 years old amazingly there still in perfect nick. |

I'll have to source assistance with pressing the hub apart and reassembly as I don't have a press but I do want to replace my back plates. This is a bit of a blow. macafee2 Last edited by macafee2; 4th December 2017 at 16:51.. Reason: spell Brian correctly |

I have replaced 4 fronts in the past month..
and they "should be" 7mm headed hex head.. and if you are lucky and there isnt much corrosion on them a 7mm ring will bite if gently tapped onto the bolt using a small hammer and punch. If it doesnt I tap a 6mm ring onto it, it only needs to bite enough to "crack it" then it can be undone by hand. and I also cut the thin piece of metal joining the centre of the backplates to get them round the hub.. hope that helps.
