The word 'legend' is used too often nowadays - but in Sir Stirling's case, totally deserved
RIP a gentleman and a TRUE legend.

Brilliant person, brave and a long innings, well deserved. He has been ill for quite a while though.
The greatest driver never to have won a world championship.

Oh! No! Having had the pleasure of meeting this legend a numerous occasions he will be sadly missed. Along with my brother David we spoke to him in the pits at Goodwood on the day that was to end his competitive day's of racing. One of my many motorsport heroes. RIP to Stirling.

A very sad announcement, R.I.P.

He sometimes appeared at the Crystal Palace, in the early fifties, when you just knew he would finish ahead of the usual top man, Reg (Reginald) Parnell.

Regards
Mike

He was a pretty useful rally driver, as well as a single seater pilot. In 1955, driving a Mercedes he won the Mille Miglia by half an hour from another legend, Juan Manuel Fangio. Stirling and his navigator completed 992 miles, on roads open to the public! - at an average speed of 99 mph
His sister, Pat, was no mug behind the wheel either, winning countless European rallies, often in an Austin Healey 3000. She went on to marry one of the pioneers of Scandinavian rallying - Erik Carlsson - often referred to as Mr Saab for his prowess in pedalling a Saab two stroke at ridiculous speeds.
I can only imagine a family gathering with three motor sport exponents of their ilk sat around the dining table - it would have been an interesting chat!!
