Wish I had the skills and knowledge to do this sort of work myself - should really have given it some serious thought back in my younger days, but that's hindsight for you!

BTW, looking forward to seeing more pics of your cars, particularly the Cortina Crusader. I had a late model Mark IV (Mark V as we used to call them) back in the 80s and loved it to bits. I sadly managed to write it off big time in an accident .

When I rebuilt the 75 engine a couple of years ago I had a set of new pistons and liners, I put them in the 75 and with new bearing shells it transformed the engine. If you look at the pictures of old piston rings in the old liners and compare them with the new, you'll see how worn they really do get, the old ones were at 125,000 miles at this point.

For a clean engine bay, it's surprisingly filthy . Guess what I'll be doing over the next couple of weeks . We also have a culprit for the noise: piston no. 1 looked very sorry for itself. The other 2 on the front bank also had some marks, but very very minor in comparison.

She'll live again, and soon be back to her best .

Cor-blimey Cliff I would have never imagined seeing the old girl in that state, your stress levels must have been taking some beating these pass few days.

Hope she is back on track very soon, she's going to be shinier than ever before.

Time to polish that bellhousing I reckon Cliff

Good luck with the rebuild, I'm sure all will be better than ever once done.

That's quite a difference!

Yeah, never imagined it myself to be honest. All just to stop a minute or so of knocking from stone cold. Ear plugs would have been a simpler solution . I woke up at 2 in the morning last night convinced I'd misplaced some of the bolts from the dismantling. I hadn't, of course .

Feel a lot better today though, now that I know some damage/wear has been found. At least it isn't all pointless .

I was looking at the bell housing this afternoon and am more in awe of Ricardo than ever before. How he has done it I will never know ..

Definitely . Not off to a good start though. Bought a tin of Gunk degreaser this afternoon and went to open it. Under the screw cap it had a plastic ring pull that was stuck fast. I gripped the tin nice and tight and gave it a good tug, and as it gave way, my grip on the tin squeezed the sides in and a jet of Gunk shot out full in the face and over my head .

That was around 6 hours ago and despite a change of clothes and numerous washes it's all I can smell. Mrs Teflon helpfully informed me earlier that I still reek of the stuff .

I hope that Russel doesn't have too much trouble reinstalling the slippery, shiny, freshly waxed parts wearing cotton archival gloves to prevent fingerprints!
You did pick the right man for the job. The MGF crowd actually call him "Saint Russell" so you are in the right hands at Easter!

For a saint, his language was a bit ripe when he came to fit the aux belt tensioner. In my efforts to clean all parts, I may have overdone it a bit as the tensioner now sounds a little dry and may need replacing .

Russell has now officially banned me from cleaning any part that "turns, twists, rotates, or moves in any direction".

I fear he may have a point
