I thought by the late 2001 project drive was well under way. Is it a rule of thumb that a Cowley will be a PPD and a Longbridge car would have project drive on them?

Pretty much. My 02 plate has most of the PPD stuff. Very few bits deleted from that. 2001 is almost guaranteed to be PPD.

No Cowley production finished in summer 2000 and Project Drive only began seriously late 2001, although it was conceived earlier . Many Longbridge cars were thus PPD , and I think it would be an erroneous generalisation to give all Longbridge cars an "inferior" badge .

Jaguar seat belt pad? Hmm.

And what's with the dodgy knife in the passenger footwell?

This one would be missing some stuff, certainly C pillar badges, black sills, emergency key, early cigar lighter, embossed handbook wallet, extra seals at bottoms of doors, better bonnet side seals. Maybe also things like embossed head restraints, 'Rover' on the windows, heat shield on the cat, PAS pressure sensor...... but yes it is relatively unscathed. Just shows how much they did delete. My 'temporary' car is missing the rear anti-roll bar!

According to Reebs excellent article on Project Drive linked by Chris75, the embossed headrests were deleted on cars from circa 27/04/01 and the boot badge was deleted (plus change of boot plinth) on cars from 04/06/01. Given that the car in question has the boot badge but not embossed headrests, it was (most probably) built between those two dates - so it will have these differences from the original spec:

Cigarette lighter changed to Rover 45 type
VIN plate altered
C pillar badges deleted
Embossed headrests deleted

The following items were deleted after losing the embossed headrests but before losing the boot badge, so this car may have been affected by some of them depending on the actual date it rolled off the production line:

Front seat belt bolt caps deleted
PAS fluid sensor & pipe assembly deleted
The Rover logo on the key fob was deleted around this time too, but exactly when isn't stipulated.

So while the car Ravinder has posted a link to is mostly PPD, it will have lost a few of those nice little touches. It still looks good though.
