As a complete computer novice I "assembled" my package which includes speakers but they have never worked , I've missed something - any ideas ?

Are you getting any sound from the speakers at all John?
Which coloured socket have you plugged them into on the back of the pc? Volume muted or turned right down on the pc? |

If you have a separate sound card have you switched off the built in sound on the motherboard
