I remember all of them, plus others, such as playing 'out' all day, only coming home when I was hungry, or when it got dark.

I agree about telling grandchildren: I read recently that the best way to keep social history alive is for grandparents to do this, as parent/children contact is too close history-wise.

Taking this up, over a period of several weeks, I put about 35000 words on paper, firstly listing the years, and adding notes to each as I remembered things. I wouldn’t go as far as saying it was my autobiography, just a lot of very fond memories.

More for the list

A book of logorithms in maths lessons

So I am positively ancient!..... And yes they were good old days playing out on the street and climbing trees for apples and pears without getting caught
I still have my parents mangle in my garden as an ornament! The farm where I was born had no electricity, but made up for it by size - the dining room table could seat 20 in comfort!

My current house has a 16 foot walk-in pantry - great, but nobody knows what a pantry is these days. Don't know what they are missing.

The farming programme I remember from my childhood was screened on a Sunday and I think it was presented by Dick Joice on behalf of Anglia TV. I liked the theme tune but its name escapes me atm as does the name of the programme.

Do you remember pulling the choke out or a car without power steering and there being only 3 channels on TV?

I remember the first telly only had BBC then when ITV started you had to have another box . And having to switch them over for the one you wanted. ( A bit like today really with sky or freesat. except there was no remote. )

Press button B to get your money back
The first phone that I had was a Trim Phone - in green. It had a lovely warble when it rang.

..... and when they cut them back, it was called "hedge cutting" - now, it's "highways vegetation management" according to my local Council!

I remember the trim phone well. We had one just after they were available. They had a wheel on the side with two options, Loud and Soft. When it was delivered, Celia, bless her, screamed out "We are not having that! You can take that back right away! They've spelled our name wrong!" The wheel was on Loud. We are blessed with the name Lloyd.

The days are long gone when 'fitted kitchen' referred to a green painted cabinet (usually full of crumbs) with reeded glass doors and a drop down front panel 3'x2' on which every kitchen chore was done. The kitchen also had an 'airing rack' on pulleys. The alternative to that, no such thing as a tumble dryer, was to stand the clothes direct from the garden washing line in the corner until they thawed out. (It were reet cowled up thur).

One size TV screen (14") which you, to see the Coronation procession last more than three hosses, had to have a convex plastic extension over it. The view other than from directly in front was weird. We were the only house in the street that had a TV so all the other kids came in and sat on the floor in front of it.
