Front discs and pads

What is the expectation of replacement of front discs and pads. Mine have both just been replaced at 53,000 kms. the mechanic said that i was lucky to get over 40,000 kms.

Our R75 club 2.5 v6 is 1999 with 51k (miles not km) on the clock. we are still on the original pads! Perhaps I should use the brakes more often.
