You can check the timing on the marks on the rear sprockets with engine in safe locked position.
It is not clear what (if anything?) has gone wrong. If it is only noise, could it be a lifter that has not pumped up yet?
Or has the tensioner not been properly pre-adjusted

Thanks Brian, on start up the cam seems to be knocking, switched off straight away.
She had an oil change, could it be as simple that the oil hasn't circulated thoroughly?
Wes, there are three sets of front tools in the dealer kit, 2.0, 2.5 and 180/190.

It has been mentioned before that the 2.0 tool is the same as the 190 when reversed, Big Russ IIRC.

Well Brian,

I did forget that the pins come out of some of the tools but I'm not sure if my set does?

Tom.

Hi.
I know the best way is to use the tools but "IF" the valve timing is correct then the old way of ensuring all is correctly aligned with clear and concisely made marks all should be correct on rebuild.
I'm now getting tetchy about MFL and what kit was used on it in December 2015.
Remember BX51CRV the ZT that broke a belt after Astreaus was about to put it on the road, under three years after a full belt kit, water pump and tensioner.

Yes I've seen some engines timed up incorrectly due to inexperienced fitters, however that is one thing Phil is not

Let us know how things go please

Good news Brian, she is back, better than ever before, all 6 cylinders running as they should be Its such a big relief, even SWMBO had a tear in here eye when we heard that gorgeous purr again.

A huge thanks to Phil, we are so greatful to him for coming out at such short notice, dont know what we would have done. I've now seen the job done 2 times (back to back), I reckon I've got it covered for my next one, I just need the tools.

Phil travelled a 280 mile round trip at roughly 6 hours quite frankly that is a service to be proud of, thats not forgetting the 4 hours of us chatting after we had already finished the job. lol

Thanks again Phil.

Fantastic news Wes, and hats off to Phil for going above and beyond the call of duty in getting this sorted for you

Are the spare two camshafts safely in the boot now

Yes, I wouldn't want to be doing this job after a three hour drive........I hope the mobile "mechanic" had a flea in his ear

Plus working is the scorching sun/heat, as lovely as it was, had to erect the parasole which was pretty much near useless. A big thanks to SWMBO for bringing on the bacon baps, tea and cold drinks etc.

You wouldn't believe me unless you had saw this happen yourself, after a few stiff words, the mobile mechanic has actually paid for the job to be done out of his own pocket.

Not only he spent 15 hours mucking up my ZT for free, he has actually given me all the money to pay for the job to be done properly.

Credit to the fella, not many people would have cared to have done that, I didn't even have to threaten him that much either.

Joking aside, he is a decent and honest guy, he held his hands up with no excuses, I do feel sorry for the bloke.

Phil and I even said he is welcome to come and watch Phil do the job, just so he could get a few pointers, sadly he declined due to work commitments.

The last 3 days has been the most unusual to say the least, I have never been in a situation as strange as this before. lol

Yes, Phil, could you explain to us what went wrong with Wes' car please?

Ref: the rattle/clatter the engine had previously, as seen in the Youtube clip... we think it was the tensioner at fault (the next few days will confirm this), I hope.

Ref: the deep knocking cam sound the engine had after the mobile mechanic had attempted to time the engine using the tipex method, he hadn't tensioned the front belt correctly, the allen key on the tensioner was way too tight. The mobile mechanic had timed the engine using the rear belts, he had already removed the front belt due to himself thinking he would use the 2.5 tool to get the cams locked in place on the 190 (the timing was out by one-two teeth).

The mobile mechanic was not confident to change the rear belts due to all the stress and problems he was experiencing, so the job would have never been 100% completed.

He hadn't even tightened any of the bolts on the engine mount.

I'm sure Phil will be along to explain it better than what I have.
