Battery replacement

I do very little mileage these days and I know winter and little use are not good for our batteries. After over 7 years it's probably due for replacement anyway, but I've been charging it on a regular basis -- probably twice a month. These cold and damp morning are the worst of course! Anyway I have decided to replace after some pointers on here. Currently I have a Bosch 72A

You're doing the right thing Rob by charging it regularly. Best of all is to leave a smart charger (such as from the C-tek range) connected all the time that the car is idle.

If it's starting the engine in cold winter temperatures then the battery's age is irrelevant. You can expect a car battery which is kept fully charged to last a long time. I've heard of ten years on this forum.

I've gone for the Yuasa YBX5000 range across my fleet, so far, so good (with some being a good few years old).
They do get a lot of heavy use, though!

My old C-class came with a Varta battery from the factory. The car was used regularly in my ownership (I used to do about 20,000 miles per year) and I finally replaced it at 10 years old. Even then, it was still quite capable of starting the car, but was weak enough to cause some trouble with some of modules if used for repeated short runs.

Unfortunately Steve at a height of 190 mm both of those are too tall to enable the battery box lid to be fitted without risking the tabs and clips breaking.

If Rob seeks a code 100 battery it will be the same or better spec. and will be the correct height, but they're rare. 096 vary but I have the Exide EA722. Here it is at Tanya. Note the price and height of 175 mm.

As a matter of coincidence, I tried to purchase from Tanya at the weekend, but couldn’t do online. Online message was something along the line of….”cannot advise courier charge at this time. Please phone us ….”.
Rang them this morning asking about a varta E44, to be told they do not ship “that type of battery to NI anymore, as the costs would be exorbitant, only do AGM type”.

Hi Simon.
I had both those sizes on my First tourer, my MGZT, and the Last Tourer all without any battery lid tabs breaking ? maybe i was lucky who knows, or just careful when i removed or fitted the lid back the link is there for people to make the choice themselves they may not be so lucky as me

The battery in your link is only ( Capacity (C20) 72 Ah
CCA (EN) 720 A)

As opposed to the Varta E44 which is ( Capacity (C20) 77 Ah
CCA (EN) 780 A) better for a diesel which needs more Ommph when starting from cold.

Yuasa is ( Capacity (C20) 80 Ah
CCA (EN) 740 A) again better for a diesel.

I have also read good posts about these from the Freelander 2 world.

I think that was very likely the case Steve! I've seen loads with either the lid missing or the tabs and clips broken and I'm sure that you have too. That has to be caused by forcing the lid because the battery is too tall. In cold weather the risk of breakage is higher when the plastic is unyielding and that's the most likely time of year for battery maintenance or replacement.

I agree Steve that it's wise to choose the highest capacity battery, particularly for the diesel, but it's interesting to see that the original spec. for the M47R and KV6 is 75Ah. The Exide EA722 at 72Ah is only 3Ah lower and I honestly don't think that's significant particularly as few batteries in service are at full capacity anyway.
