1.8 K Series fuel economy.
I have been using my 75 (1.8, without turbo) daily over the past few weeks. Usual running around plus, to work 5 days a week (which is about 10/12 miles each way, dependent on which way I go.) I fill the tank to the brim and run it down until the light comes on and then fill it again. On my last full tank to the light I got 375 miles. Which I am quite happy with, being a mixture of town and A road driving. Is this kind of economy 'right'? Pretty sure this works out around 29/30 mpg.

I used to do better than that. But it went down recently and I found the front nearside caliper was binding. So having fixed that I have filled the tank - and doubled value of car in process - and will report back when i have done a few hundred miles. Most of my driving is on open country roads.

I use fuelly.com to track my MPG - I recommend it if you're into this sort of thing as I understand it's generally more accurate than figures the car produces itself if yours has that feature.
Using Fuelly I've tracked 14800 miles and 38 fill-ups in my 75 (1.8 non-turbo). The average over the last 10 fuel ups for me has been 33.7 MPG - that's with mixed traffic mostly commuting around Cardiff at rush hour with a few motorway runs thrown in. My best recorded is 45.1 MPG, which we managed to do driving from Cardiff to the Scottish Highlands in September. If you're interested I've also been tracking our Rover 25 1.4 over 3200 miles and 15 fuel ups so far. Average over last 10 fuel ups has been 33.1 MPG and the best we've recorded for the 25 is 43.4 MPG. I find driving over 65mph in both the 75 and 25 absolutely slays the fuel level so I try to avoid that unless I'm overtaking or showing some BMW noob how it's done. |

My engine, diesel, must be in very good nick, and, or, I must be a very careful driver because, on a long trip to the continent, four up and full boot, we averaged around the 52 mpg for about 2000 miles. Once on the roads over there, we normally travel around 80 mph on m/ways, ahem, were possible, sometimes up to 90 mph if we catch someone up to overtake.I have noticed that tyres are a choice you make and I have always had Goodyear Efficientgrip Performance for years. The Fork-spokes when fitted, 16 inch wheels, with Avon Z5 on, give less mpg.Around 48 mpg average. So again, not only driving styles but tyre choice makes a difference to mpg, among many other things like keeping your car serviced properly.

Gave her a service about a month ago. I just need to change the plugs. But changing the oil alone made a difference. It had been changed in March last year by the previous owner and has only done 800 miles approximately since. I just changed it for piece of mind. Before the last few weeks its wasnt used a lot, so I didnt pay fuel alot of attention, as I have a german diesel but that is currently under going MOT work. |

Latest on my 1.8 non turbo brim to brim for 8/10 mile commute on country roads into city is 33.6mpg. Would be better on longer journey. Though the 1.8 warms up very quickly in 2 - 3 miles which is great in winter.

Don't forget the 1.8 has to drag around a decent sized heavy car so it'll never get really good MPG figures

35 MPG around the doors, and 42 on a decent run, all time best was 44MPG at 65 MPH on a trip to London.
For the turbo tourer, the best I recorded was 43 MPG when I drove to Paris, around the doors was circa 28 MPG, and combined about 34. The NASP is definitely built for comfort and not speed, but makes a refreshing change from driving a tractor Who cares really, just enjoy the car when you can Brian |
