Do not do that again while the engine is running. If the coil is not faulty it will still generate high voltage. In lack of a spark plug connection it will find a place to discharge and next time it could be in your ECU.
Returning high voltage is dangerous for electrical parts. Better (and safer) disconnect the coil plug for this kind of tests.
The ticking noise is from the purge valve and it's normal when idle. If it goes when acting the trottle there is nothing to worry about.
