Default What exactly is dirty... (air filter-wise)

Doing some work, trying to improve the MPG. Did I mention it was only 28mpg?

Anyway, egr valve currently being cleaned. PCV valve off despite not having a stupid star-type tool. But the air filter is concerning me.

Is this dirty or not? Hopefully not too dirty since I don't have a spare one handy! Attached...

tnx

Nick

I have just serviced my ZTT CDti. Before the service I was getting about 400 miles to a tank and that was on a long motorway run from plymouth to glasgow. So heres what I did during the service:
  • Oil change and flush
  • Used Millers part synthetic
  • fitted a cold air induction kit
  • got ride of the old airintake
  • New air filter
  • Dismantled the manifold and cleaned it {loads of soot in side}
  • replaced the EGR Vv with the bypass (got of ebay for £31)
  • stripped and cleaned the PCV with white spirit
  • Oiled and greased any thing that needed
  • Replaced the earthing strap on the Fuel cooler at rear of vehicle(it had corroded away)
  • then checked all the usual tyres brakes etc

I also bought some millers fuel treatment just for good measure.
It has made a BIG differance to the fuel MPG. I drove from plymouth to Hamilton last night at a steady 75-80mph and covered 477 miles and I still have just under a quarter of a tank left, with the range computer telling me I have 90miles (ish) to run.

One thing i did not replace was the fuel filter as it was done 5000 miles ago.

The bypass on the egr Vv makes the car respond like a petrol car and when you put the boot down the smoke out the back is significantly reduced ( even on setting 10 on Rons box!!)

Cleaning out the plastic manifold was a very dirty job but worth doing. I was amazing how much c~#p came out of it.

Its like driving a new car again.
