is there anyway of checking whether its the condensor or the pump thats the issue and can these be done at home, or really a mechanics job?

Surely should have been discovered with a regas?

They should check lots of things on an air con service but rarely do.

Just had 1 customer email me a service report where the air con specialist who only does air con like me.... Told them compressor had power but wasn't doing anything and that they needed an auto electrician who just said same thing power but not doing anything... Which is fault clutch coil.

Seem to be seeing a few like this now, other week had one where air con was regassed, and wouldn't work... Told customer vehicle needs a diagnostic done on a computer... I went out and belt was missing, had broken off... So no belt, no aircon compressor drive.

Worst one was when customer was told they had a leak and compressor was physically missing from vehicle.

the system should have been vacuum tested b4 it was refilled.this is to see if it has any leaks which by the sounds of it it may well have.the condenser is the number one suspect I have had replace this item on my ztt and the 75.easy enough job to do.i think it took me around three hours including driving to the aircon place to remove the gas.which was hardly any .replaced the condenser and the seals drove it back for testing and a regas works nice and cool a year later

You could start with this Frankie:
  1. Open bonnet and ask an assistant to start the engine with 'Econ' mode selected (air con. off).
  2. With your ears primed, ask the assistant to press the windscreen demist button.
  3. After about one or two seconds you should hear a positive click, more like a moderate thud really. That's the compressor clutch engaging. The engine revs might dip slightly and your radiator fan will start running.

Does all this happen?

ok ill try that, should i hear the click from under the bonnet, at the air con hardware or from inside car?

if the radiator fan DOES start, does that mean the clutch has engaged too, or not necessarily?

From under the bonnet. It's the compressor clutch to which you're listening. That's low down underneath the alternator and towards the front.

I'm not 100% sure about that. The important first test is to find out whether the compressor is engaging.

It clicks, but you're not getting cooled air out of the cabin vents, is that right Frankie?
