Default Appendix NOT Useless Now they say.

For centuries, medical Orthodoxy has maintained the appendix is Useless.

Well as with all things there is generally a reason for everything.
Now, the reputation of this cul-de-sac in the human gut has been rehabilitated by a team of American Immunologists.

They have apparently found that the Appendix acts as a store for so-called friendly bacteria, a recent talked about thing added to some foods, which is essential for healthy digestion.

Also the Appendix's job is to re-boot the digestive system after diseases such as Dysentery or Cholera, they say.

I said to my wife I always thought the body wouldn't have a unused unrequired part in it,
her response was, they give men Brains but they don't use them.
Oh well can't win them all.

Very good point John. I too found it odd that we should have something we did not require, despite being told it was possibly a remnant of evolution from when our diets were more vegetation than carnivorous. I believed it would have it's uses...

So what happens for people whom have had their appendix removed? They may be struck down with a serious illness, would they then take longer to recover compared to a similar human with an appendix? Makes you think......

And on the subject of brains.... If most of our brain is so-called unused then why is it there? Without wanting to open a can-of-worms on this subject surely there is an awful lot more the human brain can accomplish if all it's resources were used. Did anyone see a program the other week about a woman who came round from a 20-year coma? Doctors have evidence to suggest parts of her brain have adapted and 'taken over' from areas of her brain that were injured during her coma and the accident that caused it. More to make you think....

This has always been the thinking by certain members of the complimentary health fields of medicine. Nice to see it scientifically corroborated.

On the other topic.
"mens brains" (oxymoron?)

Tut Tut GG - you ought to be sticking up for the male species. Men do have brains it's just that some of us choose to save energy and not use them
