I just have a simple little Black & White micromark "wireless" camera covering the front, (and the car funny enough ) as we are virtually enclosed on all other sides by neighbours walls and very thick hedges.

I put wireless in inverted commas, as although it does transmit its pictures it still needs a power supply fed to it.

its a simple enough little thing, the receiver can handle up to 4 cameras, and can be set to automaticaly change between each one or you can choose manually. like all cameras it does need a little help at night, so it sits just above a sensor light. I have it wired up to an SVHS video and an 8 hour tape, as we would rarely be away from the house that long, although you can buy video start cameras from them.

Its main plus points are as soon as the "travelling people" see it they usually turn and walk away, it really is a great visual deterant.

So far it has solved the mystery of the soil being throw all over the path at night (two birds digging up worms) what neighbours cat is using our garden as a toilet, and most effective of all who tried to break into our neighbours back garden.

They really are a must have these days

Depends on what you want Andy, but I have the 3rd system down on the Page.
It is great quality Colour day or Night and being away a lot and my good lady on her own keeps all the grounds and Bungalow covered Inside and out.
I can also access it via a Secure computer connection from where ever I am.
I didn't pay that though for it.

I have four full size quality colour cameras hardwired to a fourway splitter and on to a timelapse video & my TV.

Things to look out for include:

As said although wireless is less hassle, they still require power scource either 9v battery or transformer hard wired to each camera.

Quality of picture via wireless signal, if generally signal reception in your area is OK then it will be reasonable. otherwise go for the hard wired type, it is only coax cable.

Night vision, B&W cameras do work better in low light but only down to around 0.5 lux, Better quality colour cameras auto switch to B&W on low light. For night vision you really need IR lighting to assist.

TV viewing, some splitters only alow you to look at one screen at a time and do not "split" the screen into four so you can monitor all four cameras at the same time.

Input into TV, this is usually done via an available scart socket, make sure you have a spare.

The latest craze in CCTV is the dome type complete colour night vision and zoom, with joystick controller.

I've been told that unless you display a sign that says something along the lines of 'CCTV in Operation' or 'These premises protected by CCTV' the footage would not be admissable as evidence in court.
Anyone know if this is true?

Not quite True Fogey.
It is permissible in Court as long as you hold the original unedited Tape/Disc/Negative.
A lot of the Surveillance CCTV is not advertised and the Police set up cameras often at a troublesome location without warnings.
It is always better to state you have CCTV could prevent you problems, doesn't mean you have something to steal!
You have to have permission to print the Picture in publication etc yourself though, one of those crazy Human Rights Rules.
