If your mapper is careful and you do a few choice upgrades you can easily get over 250 bhp from a standard engine. 300 is the absolute upper limit on standard components.
I think the lack of off the shelf upgrades stops people bothering with the v6 but I believe it's got a lot to give.
I track my 1.8t and give it death and it's been absolutely no trouble. I'd go out and buy a turbo now without hesitation.
Just watch out for neglected examples both the 1.8 and v6. But the 1.8 will be a great deal cheaper to look after. A complete rebuild is only around £700, belts and a service on a v6 will cost nearly that

How about a Supercharger for the 1.8, better low down torque, up to 260bhp possibly more.
A few years ago I was fortunate enough to experience a 190bhp 1.8k supercharged engine in a Lotus Elise, the fastest most responsive car I've been in. Ok a ZT is heavier to drag along but should be a hoot.

Link for supercharged 1.8. http://www.hangar111.com/lotus/rover...-supercharger/

How about a 1.8T with a supercharger hmmmmmm.

The only problem with the hangar setup is its hideously expensive which is ok for the lotus boys, the value of their cars massively offsets the cost of supercharging. For us lot, spending 2 to 3 times the value for the car is completely out of the question.
I recon you could have 270-280 bhp for £1500 I think the hangar kit alone is twice that without fitting and mapping

Apologies, having looked at the current pricing of the hangar kit, you'll be in for £7000 to get it sorted. Even if you needed management and en engine rebuild you won't go over £3000 on a turbo build unless you get it done for you but add £2k for labour on both anyway

Yes.....the cost is a little prohibitive..

TurboTechnics also do a Supercharger conversion £4k plus ecu. The elise had this 190 conversion.

I can't say it's something I would do.

Did Geraint finish his 1.8K build?

If so anyone know what power it made?

He's still on with it. Getting close though, still aiming for 500+ bhp. He's got a group on Facebook

This a conversation that has always interested me.

The V6 does sound nice and if you open the vis motors it accelerates really well but is pants with mid range torque. There has never been much desire in industry to tune these apart from the occasional supercharger.

The 1.8 can be a strong enough engine (Lotus did ok with it) if put together properly and maintained well. The 1.8T is also very tuneable with good power gains.. I would think with the right mods 250 is easily achievable. Not sure the 500 BHP will last long.

When I finish my current projects I wouldnt mind a 1.8t ZT as a project to give it a go

On a good run she will return 40mpg plus. But will leave many a Audi or Beemer in her dust.

Never owned a V6 so cannot comment on the performance but I have owned 2 V8's.
The first one, no.155, had all the toys but was in basic form engine wise. Now sold.
However the current MG ZTT 400, no.457, has a Kenne Bell supercharger fitted and goes like stink. Poverty spec car with no toys. Less weight and less to go wrong. (However she is currently off of the road with a ECU fault). 26mpg is possible on a good run, but I have managed to get that down to 8mpg and had to change the rear tyres after only 4,000 miles.

If I'm going to be truthful, then give me the 1.8t anytime.

Just seen a 1.8 t for sale...

Have you had any HGF with the MLS gasket at all?

Just wondering if the MLS gasket is a 100% fix for head gasket issues?

Is that a k series engine?
I think I assumed it was either the old 2.0L turbo motor or an audi / vw 1.8 turbo swap?

Iv had the V6 160 and now have the Turbo 160. I prefer the Turbo 160.

Of course there are pros and cons for each engine and people have their personal preferences but on balance its the Turbo for me.

I had my TF 160 VVC remapped by Z and F Tuning (as they were call back then), now Kmaps, and it made a fantastic difference. Not so much in power as the VVC only has about another 8bhp to give but the smoothness of the performance was greatly improved, in particular mid range power. This meant 3rd gear was great when picking up power.

A Kmaps tamper is planned for March this year on my ZT Turbo 160 .
