All of these are pretty much "future proof" because of the interchangable lenses on them. There will always be a new model that comes out that makes the previous model look 'lesser' but for many it's the far superior optics in the lenses that make the difference and are more important.

For your information, check out this website for reviews and information on Canon SLR cameras and lenses: http://www.the-digital-picture.com/

the D40X would be the latest of the D series Nikons, it would be a 10MP camera, the D40 is a 6.1

again, as mentioned look around and try before you buy I chose the D40 as it was lighter and easier to use (for me) you may prefer the slightly bigger canon ones (I was going to get a 350D but at the time stocks were very low, but I am still more than happy with my choice)

I'm an Olympus fan, but I wouldn't recommend an Olympus SLR if you just want a bit of fun. They don't have as many lenses and accessories as Nikon or Canon.

If you want digital quality and have just under £20,000 lying about then take a look at this 39 mega pixel monster!

I wonder if this will be going to the moon like its predecessor.

That was my shortlist from a few months back, I ended up pushing the boat out on a Canon 30D. Now I am after the 70-200mm f2.8 Lseries Lens, an expensive bug seems to have bitten me.

If you go down the Canon route I have a 55-200mm lens I bought 2 months ago that is going up for sale at a very good price over the next week or so.

Here is a good website for price comparisons:

Just a word of advice for anyone contemplating the purchase of cameras or other photography equipment, by all means go along to the high street retailers like Jessop & co.
But remember that you will invariably see it cheaper on the web, but please give the retailers a chance to price match.
I have just bought a Canon Speedlite 580EX11 from Jessop up for £399.99, they price matched to Warehouse Express saving me £50.00.
I’ve obtained most of my gear from Jessop, all price matched, and remember it’s always better to be able to take it back to the shop that you bought it from if anything goes wrong!

I think i'm leaning towards the Canon 400D. Looked in currys this afternoon and found it reasonably priced compared with the net. The nearest Jessops to me is 40 miles away!

Don't forget there is also a £50.00 rebate from Canon on the 400D if you apply before the end of August.

With the Camera Price Buster for discount at Currys and the £50 Canon rebate you are down to £390. Bargain...

Wot

I too went to Jessops to look at cameras. A friend bought himself a Canon 350D and I was instantly bitten by the bug. I looked over them all at my local Jessops shop and then went online to further research. I ended up going back and forth between web-based information and 'playing' with them in Jessops until I finally decided on a Canon 30D. I asked Jessops if they would price match and I was suprised when they said "yes".

I too much prefer to buy in a shop, especially when it is something of this value and fragileness (is that a word?!). As a case example, I spent over-the-odds in a shop on some stereo equipment simply because I felt safer carying it home myself than having it delivered from an online store.

Jessops don't stock gear or anything for my camera. Nor do they have any stuff for 35mm, apart from limited film and processing. Takes the fun out of shopping when it all has to be special ordered.
I could be wrong but I don't think they do second hand gear these days?

But still, they supply the main stream equipment. That's the importing thing here.

Granted they are not perfect and for specialist stuff and the like then there are other retailers outthere that can probably provide a better service for those such items. However, as you say, to get you off to a start then they are certainly very good.
