A good Jack Russell is also a good rodent catcher!

Not sure I'd keep mine under the bonnet of my car though!

https://products.liqui-moly.com/marten-spray-2.html

This is a German product to repel Martens (which is a small weasel, as already mentioned, they are very cute if you are not going to be eaten by them!)
The strange thing is, here, it is sold as a rat repellent. I am not sure if that is because it works against rats (which is our problem) or because the importers are really really clever or really really stupid!
I have bought one, but never used it, yet.

I have a problem with poison in that it is indiscriminate. If you inadvertently kill the predators (owls, hawks etc.) the position gets worse in the long run.

But I do live in a country area, although I hear there are increasing numbers of kestrels in urban areas?

I have a problem with poisons too.
The above product works by changing the smell, somehow, it does not kill anything.
Except your wallet!

Is that cheap & cheerful you're after?

I've made a mix of ground rice or semolina or the like provided it's thin, with a part of plaster (3/4, 1/4 approx).
It's a recipe coming from North Africa.
I've put that trapped food in both my garages: I haven't mice & rats any longer and our lovely she cat doesn't like that so no harm to anybody but rodents. You may also put the mix in a box with a hole on the front / side to allow rodents only inside.
Got it?

Bingo!

Apparently they don't like the smell of peppermint oil.

Yes it is truly hilariously funny, so much so I fell off my chair whilst reading it, and it took a whole minute or so am told to recover my composure, ha ha ha.
Best repellent for mouse is cat. Eco friendly, politically correct, good for training purposes as well as for health and safety, it meets all requirements, including both European, and British standards.
Available from local pet shops.
Good luck

If they're nibbling your underbonnet wiring there's a good chance they've made a nest in the bonnet soundproofing. Pop it off and evict the little buggers.
