When the valves came into contact with the pistons, this is when the rockers were damaged.

When the head is removed all will become apparent

This particular engine, and by that I mean the M47R, has three different thicknesses of head gasket, according to tolerances, including head skims, and the pistons actually protrude through the gasket fire rings, and the clearance to the valves is minimal.

I look forward to the next part of the strip down.

Brian.
I will be carrying on with the strip down later today after real life projects have been sorted out, now we know that using a rattle gun is not recommended but always use the right tool.

It's certainly easier to remove the fuel pump with the engine out of the car Steve.

I stripped the engine out of my scrapper down just to see what made them tick, and despite it having covered around 180k miles there were no visible signs of wear - it all looked pretty much like new!

Quite remarkable, especially considering the M47 was the pioneer for BMW entering the 4 cylinder diesel market. They got it pretty much spot on.

By The looks of the slack in that chain, I think Brian is correct. Never even entered my feeble mind about that chain getting that slack from using a rattle gun. Could I suppose have been a broken tensioner or guide for said chain.

Hi David.
No the chain is slack because I removed the HPFP then removed the special tool which is used to push the HPFP through for removal if you were going to change the HPFP for a new/ good one then the tool would have remained in position until the pump had been reinstated

I manage to get a quick hour on the engine today after real life got in the way, removed the head photo's below.

Yesterday, I managed to run the front offside tyre onto the bolt that sticks out slightly from the lower strut on my garage door. Pphhhfftt. The tyre not me. Left it in disgust to flatten itself while I cussed and shut the doors on it. Today I phoned my usual tyre supplier, Tyresrus, to see if they had a Goodyear Efficientgrip in stock. No! Oh sugar. Said he could get me one for 2.00 pm. Oh great. Went to garage to change tyre. Started car and drove it out of the garage onto the yard. Stopped car and made sure it was in gear and handbrake fully on. Changed wheel for the ‘skinny’ spare. First time it has been used in 17 years. Put punctured wheel in boot, and went to start car and............flashing headlights and nowt. Oh no! Or words to that effect. What do I do now? Stuck across the yard stopping the chap next door from getting to his garage. Oh tatters. Yikes! What to do now? Decided to get the battery off the silver one and try that one. That car has only been started 4 times since I got it in September. Change them over and fingers and toes ,eyes, legs and everything else crossed, turned the key, ..................and it flew over and started. Phew! So went and got tyre changed, and £51 later was a happy bunny. My Bosch 4 year guaranteed battery which is 6 years old almost to the day, is now on charge. See tomorrow if it’s still any good. The problem is that I only do all short journeys this time of the year,1/2/3 miles at the most. Diesel heater,40watt to drive it, and I have a switch to put it on ,and it has been used a lot lately in the lousy weather we have been having although it has not been that cold. Heated rear window, heater, they all use quite a few amps when on together, so that, I hope is the reason for the glitch..............I hope. We shall see tomorrow.

I did a little more on the M47 engine today removed the chains, tensioner, compressor, used a crank bolt I had to turn the crank shaft which turns ok and move the pistons up and down smoothly.

Some dreary old battleship grey mongbox ZTT barge turned up at my place for a bit of diagnosis.

MAF goosed, output at idle what would be expected at 3500 RPM

ABS fault, OSR wheel bearing oil seal scuffed from rusty backplate

SRS DCU no fuse, refitted, SRS warning, after viewing Mr CrappyCrimp's workmanship, seat out and a bit of hardwiring, result working SRS

So the owner was sent on his way southward with a shopping list of fixes....

Rear bearing HERE

I've moved house and changed my number........you know who you are
