To be honest, in some cases I wish they would. I'd far rather just see 'No Longer Available' as it would allow me to make an easier decision whether to seek a second hand part, or repair the one I already have, instead of leading me down a path of reassurance only to discover some serious problem once I go to fit their ill-fitting re-manufactured part.

Where would I be now if Rimmer Brother's didn't still have two original bushes in stock? As it was the car was off the road for another week. Had I known the bushes weren't available, I may have tried to keep the originals.

I have mentioned before that Rimmers sell parts as genuine just because they come from X-part, other suppliers too may do that but in my opinion, they are not genuine, they are pattern.

Curious what Trading Standards would make of it.

The quality of pattern parts has been causing problems for years with classic car owners. I remember helping a friend install a new heater box in his MGB a few years ago. The old one had rotted out and the new one though looking OK did not fit, some phone calls and looking on the Web reckoned this was a common problem so some mods were carried out with an angle grinder and a drill to put the mounting holes in the correct place.

If this part was £50 you would not mind but it was over £200 and there was no way it was going to last as long as the original looking at the thickness of the metal it was made from.

Some of the pattern parts I have bought for my Jensen have been of such poor quality I have sent them back and either sourced a good used part or repaired the one I have.

Don't get me started on the demise of "British" engineering. We could be here a very long time. I won't be buying anything made in China or India (if I can help it) but I'm not sure that there will be much else soon.

Unfortunately cheap, ends up being exactly the opposite in every respect. Buying parts that are fit for landfill creates a huge carbon footprint for no purpose at all! Our trouble is that it's virtually impossible to make an informed decision anymore. 'Genuine' and 'OEM' are used to describe most aftermarket parts, and most of the aftermarket suppliers of any stature now only appear to be responsible for packaging imported rubbish.

I think X Part, Rimmers etc will have to step up their quality control because nobody will buy their products if it's not fit for purpose.

I appreciate good copies will be more expensive, but at least it will sell.

It should be mentioned, I am not a mechanic, I am an engineer, and view components differently to the way a garage employing parts fitters view them.

Brian
I bought mine from a localish Xpart dealer at around £250 for the pair. My car was off the road at the time and I had the use of a lift for a few hours. I had problems with the bushes and Brian was an absolute legend in lending me some new bushes and the removal/fitting tool as well as meeting me half way between our homes (eternally grateful mate) I’ve got to admit that at the time I didn’t pay much attention to the new arms other than adding extra rust protection as I needed the car off the lift. There weren’t any issues with fitting and this was before Brian had spotted some quality issues. The thought of doing these again along with other jobs as parts quality is an issue does make me wonder sometimes if it’s time to move onto newer things.

I think the point the OP was making was that despite having identical part numbers there is a difference in size. If you buy the Indian arms then fit brushes made in India, if you need brushes for the original arms then buy the made in UK type.

Regards
