No, that's OK. This relay simply provides power to the fan's main power relays located in the motor control box. The ususal issue with the older 3-speed system is wear of the motor brushes. Ther are reams of info here on how the problem can be tackled. So, I'd suggest a simple forum search using the Google system at the top of the page. Alternatively, hang around here.

Hi Gary,

The yellow relay identified by a fan blades graphic is for the heater/air con. blower motor inside the car. It has absolutely nothing to do with your faulty radiator fan.

Just out of interest, did you discover this by using the air conditioning? Surely your diesel didn't overheat!

If your car is fairly high mileage then it's fairly certain you'll find the fan brushes are the problem.

One of these 4 beasties.

Hi Simon and covert
I've only had the car for a month took it to big russ as its a slow starter and he gave it a T4 cheak over and showed the fan not working so being an 04 though it needs the resister change and no its not getting hot and it's 98000 miles so it looks like new brushes
Think I've got a spare 3 speed fan in the garage I'll have to try it on weather allowing

Cheers Gary

Hi Gary.
Did Russ not tell you if it is a two wire 2 speed fan with resistor, your a four wire 3 speed fan as T4 will have put it through all the speeds, low medium & high for a 3 speed and low & high for the 2 speed.

If you have the two wire 2 speed with resistor all that needs changing is the resistor, unless Russ said high speed is not working having forced it on the T4

It's not working on High speed Steve, so it looks like brushes or a replacement motor, you can hear a click from the relay box but that's all

Got a couple of good working two speed motors if needed

Default cooling fan not working

Hi Guys this is my first time on this site.

Long story> My first Rover was a brand new 620 2ltr tax free in Germany. Fantastic car. In 3 years I did 250,000 trouble free miles and at that Point I gave it to Car-Mechanics mag as a project car. I then got a rover 75, excellent car until I had a blow out over-taking a bus and ploughed in to the side of it. I then bought my current car a Rover 45 club SE. 2004 with only 63000 on the clock, 1 owner from new + full service history.
when parked in Tesco's a van reversed into the front of my car and its tow bar went through into my radiator, a witness left a not on my car about the incident but did not get the number.

I changed the rad etc but the fan doesn't run!! I usually do all my own repairs but due to cancer I decided to take it to my local Rover/MG garage, the very first time in my life. I told them exactly what was wrong and requested the fan be fixed and the damaged multi-plug connector be replaced. What a shock , they said for all repairs a diagnostic test is first carried out at a cost of £114.00 before they even look at the fault!! my question is 2 fold, 1> is it now Garage practice to charge for a diagnostic test before even looking at or repairing the reported fault, despite saying That had put power to both fans and neither work and that I had tested the inline Thermostat and for any airlocks, all was well. 2> using my key fob the doors unlock fine but will not relock the doors> any ideas.
pps: Brilliant site very informative. Keep well Dennis
