Default Oil light coming on..diesel..

Hi Folks,

The oil light won’t go out until about 1800 rpm...
I know it needs an oil change but I just changed the filter for now due to all the rain. Changing the filter alone hasn’t helped.
I need to replace the PCV filter.. could this cause the problem?

I suppose it could be something deeper like the pressure relief valve being stuck with crud or the sensor being faulty but I’d appreciate any opinions..

BTW the engines done 235k and otherwise runs fine.

Thanks guys.

Don’t think the PCV filter has anything to do with oil pressure.

Default Oil light coming on..diesel..

I have had cars with totally blocked pcv filters and the oil light didn’t show.

Change pcv, change oil and filter and do an engine flush, if that doesn’t work. Do an actual test of the oil pressure (fit a temp gauge) sounds like a failing oil pump to me.

Swap the oil pressure switch. They are known to fail or become unreliable.

The oil could be contaminated with diesel.

Is this a conundrum question? You know it needs an oil change, but you come here and ask if anyone has any ideas what might be causing it? I suggest you change the oil, then if the problem remains, you then look for the other things that have been mentioned here.

Hi David.
was the fault there before you changed out the oil filter only, if so have you fitted the oil O-ring correctly if not then ignore this post.

But do the oil change asap then go from there.

A bad injector could also "thin" the oil with diesel over time. The derv can run down the sides of the piston rings on start up if the injectors are not atomising the spray correctly. Just another scenario! Has the oil level "risen" at all?

Change the oil with a vacuum pump like a PELA pump.

You don't need to get under the car or get dirty or wet if its raining.

Go have a cup of tea indoors while the old oil is getting sucked out of the sump.----
